CYSTECTOMY (LAPAROSCOPIC)

ABOUT CYSTECTOMY (LAPAROSCOPIC)

Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy is a minimally invasive surgery (MIS) that can be safely performed during pregnancy to manage benign ovarian cysts. Its
considered the standard surgical approach and can be performed between the 12th and 16th weeks of gestation.

Laparoscopic surgery has several advantages over traditional open surgery,
including:

  • Less pain

  • Less tissue and emotional trauma

  • Faster recovery

  • Smaller healing wound

  • Reduced risk of intraoperative complications if a C-section is needed

  • Shorter hospital stay

  • Fewer post-operative complications

Studies have shown that laparoscopic surgery for ovarian cysts during pregnancy is safe and successful. There are no adverse effects on the pregnancy outcome. In one case, a laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy was performed at 13 weeks of gestation to treat a cyst that had twisted, and the surgery was successful without any
complications to the mother or fetus. After surgery, most women feel better within a week, but they should avoid lifting, pushing, or pulling heavy objects for a few weeks. Sexual intercourse should also be avoided until a doctor says it is okay, and full recovery can take four to six weeks.
