INSTRUMENTAL DELIVERY

About INSTRUMENTAL DELIVERY

Instrumental vaginal delivery (IVD) is a procedure that uses instruments like forceps or a vacuum to assist with vaginal delivery. It can be used as an alternative to a caesarean section.

Women may need an assisted vaginal birth, and this is more likely for women having their first baby.

IVD may be used for fetal or maternal reasons, or for both. Fetal conditions that may require IVD include:

• Fetal heart rate abnormality

• Malposition of the fetal head, such as Occiput Posterior (OP)

IVD is safe and only used when necessary for the mother and baby. However, there are some risks associated with these delivery methods, including:

Risks to the mother

Increased potential of lacerations, short-term urinary incontinence, and increased blood loss

Risks to the baby

Minor facial injuries, temporary facial muscle weakness, and skull fracture
