OVULATION/ FOLLICULAR  STUDY

About OVULATION/ FOLLICULAR  STUDY

What happens after follicular study?

A Follicular study also known as a follicular scan, is a series of transvaginal ultrasound scans that monitor the growth of ovarian follicles during a menstrual cycle. The scans are painless and take about 5–10 minutes each. A doctor or sonographer performs the scans by inserting a small plastic probe into the vagina.

A follicular study is a key part of fertility treatments and IVF assessment. It can help couples conceive by allowing sperm and egg to meet at the optimal time. The study can predict ovulation by determining the number and growth of active follicles in the ovaries. Active follicles are most likely to contain an egg. The doctor can then tell the approximate time when the egg will be released, so couples can plan intercourse at that time.

A follicular study can be used for:

  • Evaluating infertility

  • Pre-mature ovarian failure

  • Counting the number of follicles

  • Monitoring follicle growth

  • Analyzing the best time for intercourse

  • Guiding procedures such as IUI or IVF

  • Monitoring changes in the endometrium

  • Monitoring the effectiveness of fertility drugs

  • Adjusting fertility drug doses

A doctor will usually suggest the scan on days 6 or 7 of a 28-day cycle. Because the ovulation window is so large, each cycle may require 8 to 10 scans. The success rate of a follicular study depends on the age and medical history of the woman.

  • Follicular study test usually takes about 10-15 minutes for each sitting. However, it may last longer if there are any associated co-morbid conditions.

  • 5-6 sittings may be required for follicular study and monitoring. You may be called on consecutive or alternate days for monitoring starting from Day 9 or day 10 of your menstrual cycle.

  • You will be allowed to leave once the imaging is over.

  • After the scanning is over, your Sonographer will evaluate the result and make a report.

  • You will get the reports on the same day.

  • This report will be analyzed by your Gynecologist to make a proper management plan for you.

  • Follicular study is a safe, rapid and painless procedure with no risk or side effects. However, some women may feel a bit discomfort during insertion of transducer into the vagina.
