MYOMECTOMY (OPEN)
About OPEN MYOMECTOMY
An open myomectomy, also known as an abdominal myomectomy, is a major surgical procedure to remove fibroids from the uterus while preserving the
uterus. Its usually performed when fibroids are larger than 10 cm and there are multiple fibroids.
During the procedure, a surgeon makes an incision in the abdominal wall, usually horizontal and low on the belly, around the same location as a C-section incision. The Incision may go up and down (vertical) or across (horizontal). Vertical incisions are needed for larger uteruses. The surgeon then sutures the uterine muscle back together using several layers of stitches.
An open myomectomy has a longer recovery time and carries some additional risk compared with other approaches to myomectomy. Risks associated with open myomectomy include: Infection, Bleeding, and Injury to surrounding organs, and Thromboembolism (blood clot in legs or chest).
A full recovery after surgery will take about 6 weeks. It is normal to have vaginal bleeding and discharge for 1 to 2 weeks after surgery. For 6 weeks after surgery, you need to avoid strenuous exercise, lifting heavy objects, and sexual activity.
