VAGINAL SURGERY

About VAGINAL SURGERY

Types of vaginal surgery related to pregnancy:

  • Episiotomy

A surgical incision to help deliver a baby when the vaginal opening doesn't stretch enough.

  • Vaginoplasty

Also known as vaginal reconstruction surgery, this cosmetic procedure tightens and repairs vaginal muscles and tissues that have been damaged or overstretched during childbirth.

  • Perineoplasty

A surgical repair of the perineum, the area between the anus and vagina, which can be damaged during childbirth.

  • Surgical correction of vaginal obstruction

A surgical correction of a complete transverse vaginal septum or imperforate hymen can help with pregnancy success.

Why is vaginal surgery performed?

There are several reasons why your healthcare provider may recommend vaginal surgery during your pregnancy. Some reasons for vaginal surgery include:

Incompetent (weakened) cervix. This can happen due to past surgeries such as LEEP procedures or other surgeries on cervical tissue.

Past miscarriages from an abnormally shaped uterus or damage to your cervix.

Past miscarriages during the second trimester that suggest weakened cervix.

It’s important to discuss with your healthcare provider any past pregnancies, miscarriages and procedures you’ve had. If your healthcare provider thinks you may benefit from a vaginal surgery procedure, they’ll perform it at about 12 to 14 weeks into your pregnancy, before your cervix thins out.
